Name Type: shore
Meaning: "The small fields of the beach." Goirtean means "a small patch of arable land" (Dwelly). The plural 'Na Goirteanan' is found twice on Mull (OS1/2/37/123 and OS1/2/77/24. Ceann Traghad 'the headland of the beach' is found in Benbecula (OS1/18/10/2). There are a number of cultivated crescents along the north shore between Vaul and Balephetrish.
Other Forms: Collected by the OS (including John Gregorson Campbell) as Na Goirteana Tràgh'd, with Gortan Tràigh crossed out "a small bay situated 1/4 mile east of Am Beannan Ruadh...significance Stringy Beach crossed out".
