It was the mother of Ciorstaidh and grandmother of Maggie Brown, Màiri nighean Eòghainn, who had the shebeen. Story of the gauger trying to catch her out and being sold a bottle of urine. He stamped it and took he to court in Tobermory - Hector MacPhail, Ruaig, 12/1995 and 3/1996.
Two excisemen came off the boat and went to see an old lady who they suspected of selling whisky. Now the “bush telegraph” had been working and the woman knew who they were but she didn’t let on. They asked if she could give them a dram each and the old lady gave them what they asked for. They asked if they could have two bottles of the same stuff to take away and the old lady went round the back. She was gone a little while but came back with two bottles, whereupon they “pounced” and arrested her. She was taken to court in Oban and the sheriff asked her, “Did you sell these men whisky?” The woman replied, “I didn’t sell them whisky and I wouldn’t like to taste it!” It was her own urine!
