Map Reference: Vaul 56

Name Type: sliabh

Meaning: There are at least three plausible reconstructions:
• ON skeið ‘longship’ (see Skibo in Gammeltoft 2001, 312), ‘a kind of swift-sailing ship of war of the class langskip, but distinguished from dreki’ (CV, 542)
• ON skíð ‘billet of wood, firewood’ (CV, 550 > the word ‘ski’). Skíð occurs seven times as a farm name in Iceland (SAM)
• The ON male personal name Skíði
The generic is ON vík ‘bay’.
There is a Skivika in Bodø, Norway (NG); Skíð- is quite a common specific among Icelandic farm names, for example Skíðbakki (SAM). This may have been the Norse name for Tràigh Bhalla.
