Township: Sandaig

Map Reference: Sandaig 67

Name Type: shore

Meaning: With only one source form, any derivation has to be speculative. Despite the simplicity of the name, there are two possible reconstructions:
• ON m?l (dative plural m?lum) 'pebbles, worn stones, i.e. the bed of pebbles on the beach' (CV, 433). There is one Møl and eight Mølen in Norway (NG). The phonetic development ON ? > u? is also found in ON fj?ru > Fiura (see section 17.4.2.1)
• ON múli (dative múla) ‘promontory’. Mula is a common name in Shetland (SP); Mula is a farm name in Norway (OR); there is a Múli in the Faroe Islands (KO); and Múli is a common farm name in Iceland (SAM). The phonetic development ú > ?? is also found in ON Úlfr > Ulbhag (see section 17.4.2.1)
There is a Moul Head in Orkney (SP), a Moolie on Rousay (Marwick 1995 (1947), 64), and Moul of Eswick in Shetland (SP).
