Township: Sandaig

Map Reference: Sandaig 67

Name Type: shore

Meaning: There are at least four plausible reconstructions:
• ON m?l (genitive and in compounds malar) ‘pebbles, worn stones, i.e. the bed of pebbles on the beach’ (CV, 433). There is one Møl and eight Mølen in Norway (NG)
• ScG mol ‘shingle beach’ < ON m?l (MacBain; Cox 2002b, 110). See Am Mol, Carloway (Cox 2002b, 341). There is no Gaelic definite article in the Tiree name
• ON múli (dative múla) ‘promontory’. There is a Mula na Caillich in Lochs, Lewis, and Mula is a common name in Shetland (SP); Mula is a farm name in Norway (OR); Múli is a common farm name in Iceland (SAM); and there is a Múli in the Faroe Islands. The initial syllable, which is usually preserved, however, is short here
• ON hólmr ‘islet’ with metathesis. Holmen is quite common in Norway (NG), and Holm(e) is quite a common farm name in Norway (OR)
