Name Type:

Meaning: With just one oral source for this name, we need to proceed cautiously. It is possible that this is a Norse name in ON sker 'skerry'. If so, the specific is best left open at the moment. Tellingly, there are no Crom-initial names in the Northern Isles (SP).
It is more convincing, however, that this is an entirely Gaelic construction, with ScG crom 'crooked, bent' in an initial position and ScG sgeir 'skerry’. Crom-initial names occur twice out of fourteen names with the element in Argyll: for example Cròm Dhoire 'the crooked thicket' near Larig (SP).
