Township: Sandaig

Map Reference: Sandaig 54

Name Type: shore

Meaning: This may be reconstructed from OI flöt 'plain ... Flötr a local name' (CV, 163). ON fl?tr 'strip of arable land or grass land' > de Flets in Dunrosness, Shetland (Jakobsen 1936, 41). There is also a Fletts in Stromness, Orkney (SP); Floten is quite a common name in Norway (NG); Fløter is a farm name in Norway (OR); and Fløtan occurs six times as a settlement name in the Faroe Islands (KO). If this is the derivation, the name must have transferred from the land. The phonetic development ? > ei is found in ON lœkr > ScG lèig (see section
