Township: Salum

Map Reference: Salum 15

Name Type: shore

Meaning: This may derive from ‘ON krúna ‘crown, wreath, crown of the head’. ‘As a place-name in Shetland, kr?n denotes a circular hilltop, a hill with a circular top’ (Jakobsen 1936, 74). Topographically the generic is most likely to be ON gjá ‘coastal gully’; phonologically ON gerði ‘fence, field’, or ON geiri ‘a triangular piece of land’ suits better, but would imply that this place-name had transferred, possibly from Am Fang Cruinn, which suits topographically.
Krone and Krune are quite common names and there is a Krunenes in Bømlo, Norway (NG); Krónustaðir is a farm name in Iceland (SAM).
