ON skip (genitive plural skipa) ‘boat’, with ON nes ‘promontory’. Skipa-nes ‘the promontory of the boats’. It is possible that there was a noust site here. There is certainly a good, if small, harbour, which is still used. It held eighteen boats at one time (Iain MacDonald, Ruaig, pers. comm.).
