Township: Hynish

Map Reference: Hynish 40

Name Type: sea

Meaning: The specific may be ON hnísa (genitive singular and plural hnísa) 'porpoise' (CV, 276). The harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) is common in the waters around Tiree. The generic is ON vík ‘bay’: Hnísavík. This name may have acquired the ScG definite article through re-interpretation (Cox 2002, 54). This occurs when a later Gaelic speaker, encountering a name with an initial /n/ containing a word she does not understand, assumes and introduces a 'missing' definite article 'an'.
Nisa occurs four times in Norway, and here is a Nisevikane in Radøy, Norway (NG); there is a Nísutúgva in the Faroe Islands (KO).
