Township: (Rubha) Craignis,Hough

Map Reference: Craignish 26

Name Type: shore

Meaning: This may be a Norse name, with the common element ON barn ‘child or small feature’ (Berit Sandnes, pers. comm.; see Barnaisgeir below), although there is no genitive morpheme /s/. If it was Norse, the weakly stressed generic is now obscure, having been re-semanticised into ScG druim 'ridge or back'. One possibility is ON straumr 'current'. Straum occurs as a generic in Norwegian place-names such as Alverstraumen, Saltstraumen and Skatestraumen on NS.

Other Forms: ONB p. 11 gives the same, "meaning unknown."
