Meaning: ON brúk ‘dried heaps of seaweed’ (CV, 84). This has become an ON > ScG loan word in the Outer Hebrides – brùc ‘seaweed cast ashore (Lewis)’ (MacBain) – although ScG brùc has generated no names on SP.
This is an uncommon element. There is a Brugs in Northmaven, Shetland (SP); Brukaas is a farm name in Norway (OR).
