Township: An Àird a Deas,Caolas

Map Reference: Ardeas 23

Name Type: shore

Meaning: The specific is ON hross ‘horse’. The generic ON gil ‘gully’ suits the coastal topography, and may explain the palatisation of the medial -s-. ‘ON gil is as in Roisigil, ‘ravine of the horse(s)’, where the Norse probably left their dead horses. That was not uncommon at the time. There is a fine ravine there, which would have suited the Norse down to the ground’ (Donald Meek, pers. comm.). The generic, however, could also be the weakly stressed ON kollr ‘rounded hill’.
There is a Ross Geo on Westray, Orkney (SP); Ross- is a common specific among Norwegian farm names, as in Rosseland (OR); and Hross- occurs twice as a specific in Icelandic farm names (SAM).

Other Forms: Rosgaill - ONB p120, described as "a small house"
