Township: An Àird a Deas,Caolas

Map Reference: Ardeas 23

Name Type: shore

Meaning: The specific is ON hross ‘horse’. The generic ON gil 'gully' suits the coastal topography, and may explain the palatalisation of the medial -s-: Hrossgil. 'ON gil is as in Roisigil, 'ravine of the horse(s)', where the Norse probably left their dead horses. That was not uncommon at the time. There is a fine ravine there, which would have suited the Norse down to the ground' (Donald Meek, pers. comm.).
There is a Ross Geo on Westray, Orkney (SP); Ross- is a common specific among Norwegian farm names, as in Rosseland (OR); and Hross- occurs twice as a specific in Icelandic farm names (SAM).

Other Forms: Rosgaill - ONB p120, described as "a small house"

Roisigil - DM

Roisgal - common current local usage
