Township: Barrapol,Ceann a’ Bharra

Map Reference: Kenavara 12

Name Type: shore

Meaning: A loan word from ON gil > ScG gil (see above), in the plural ‘the gullies’. A nearby fishing rock at the base of the Kenavara cliffs is known as ScG Carraig na Gillean 'the fishing rock of the boys'. The folk etymology is that four boys were swept off this by a freak wave and drowned while fishing. It is possible that the referent for this is actually the neighbouring feature called Na Gilean.
